Description:
Rangely is located in Rio Blanco County - about 250 miles (400 kilometres) west of Denver, Colorado. There's always a lot of oil and gas drilling going on with this particular site immediately off state highway 64. MommyOfBrooke2007 wrote to explain that, "...workover rig means that they basically do everything for the oil to be pumped out. they put in the pumps, pipe, all of that type of stuff. a drilling rig drills the hole but the workover rig gets it everything needed and done so the oil can be pumped out. and after the oil is all pumped out they shut down the well also. its alot of work. they work really long hard hours." hefley4 provided this info in January 2011: Both types of rigs described are mobile replacements of the former, immovable derricks (ie, towers) that stood over oil wells up until the late 50's. Both resembled unmanned forest-lookout towers, except for a small a-frame on top of the top platform ("crown block"). Drilling derricks were taller and often had a second platform 2/3 of the way up; cleanout derricks remained over the finished, pumping well for servicing. Rangely had some of the latter preserved in town through the late '70's. Here's my personal web page about fossil fuels: http://www.rogerwendell.com/fossilfuels.html 08-23-2010

Drilling rigs drill ...
Drilling rigs drill the initial wellbore. Larger than the workover rig pictured, they have many skid-mounted pieces of auxiliary equipment attached and run 24/7. They are on location until casing is run & cemented. Workover rigs do well completion & subsequent service work. They are generally mounted on a wheeled carrier & have a telescoping derrick. Auxiliary equipment is a pump & tank skid, cargo trailer sized doghouse, BOP skid & various upright or flat tanks. They work daylight only.
